In 1975, Renault made an announcement to enter the World Rally Championship with a new machine based on its Renault 5. The machine was a 4-cylinder turbo 4-cylinder OHV 1397cc, mounted in the middle to optimize the distribution of weight. Double wishbone suspension featured front torsion bar springs and rear spoiler spring configuration to enable superb off-road performance. In October 1979, the machine made its debut in the race at Giro d'Italia and the following year saw the WRC debut on the Tour de Corse. In the opening round of the 1981 WRC season, the Monte Carlo Rally saw Renault demonstrate its great potential to claim the first winner.

About the Renault 5 Turbo

The R5 Turbo Rally with rear-wheel drive led by J. Ragnotti at the 1981 World Rally Championship was quite different from the production vehicle. The four-cylinder overhead valve engine featured a unique Gallet T3 turbocharger system and a Bosch K Jetronic fuel injection system, producing an impressive power output of 250 hp. The 5-speed transmission and the engine were assembled centrally for excellent weight distribution and handling, regardless of the surface. The Renault 5 Turbo stood out in the icy conditions during the Monte Carlo Rally in 1981, having an unexpected victory ahead of its 4x4 traction rivals such as the 1981 Audi Quattro.
